Prehnite

Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate mineral, best known in its soft, translucent green to yellowish-green colour, often with a gentle, glowing appearance. It forms in cavities and veins in volcanic rocks such as basalt, often in rounded, bubbly (botryoidal) masses. Prehnite from Australia often contains dark green to black needles of epidote, which give a striking contrast when cut into beads or cabochons.

Prehnite was named after Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, a Dutch military commander of the Cape of Good Hope colony in South Africa, who brought the first specimens to Europe in the 18th century. It is often said to be the first mineral named after a person. It was formally described in 1788.

Gem-quality prehnite is found mainly in Australia, South Africa, Mali and China, with smaller amounts from India, Canada and the USA. Most prehnite is cut into cabochons and beads; transparent, faceted stones are rare. Prehnite is generally untreated, although some may be dyed or coated. Its soft green colour sometimes leads to confusion with jade or chrysoprase.

Caring for prehnite

Prehnite is moderately hard (6 – 6.5 on the Mohs scale) and suitable for most jewellery, but it can scratch and should be protected from knocks. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, high heat and harsh chemicals. Store separately from harder stones in a soft pouch.

In folklore

The beliefs below are traditional folklore, included for interest. They are not scientifically proven, and nothing here is medical advice.

Prehnite has a relatively short history as a named gemstone, but in Southern Africa it was used by traditional healers who believed it helped connect them with the spirit world. Modern tradition calls it a "stone of prophecy" and links it with dreaming and remembering. It is associated with the zodiac sign Libra.

Prehnite is traditionally regarded as a stone of unconditional love and calm. Crystal healing lore holds that it eases anxiety, encourages inner peace and acceptance, and helps the wearer prepare for change. It is also said to enhance intuition and is sometimes called the "healer's stone". It is linked to the heart and solar plexus chakras.

Related stones

Epidote (often found as needles inside prehnite), datolite, zeolites and apophyllite, which often form alongside it. Stones that can look similar include jade, chrysoprase, green chalcedony, peridot and smithsonite.
